It has been a while since I have practised surfcasting. It is not the easiest of fishing techniques. There are a set of basic principles to take note of.
The sea roughness,
The sea has to be moderately rough. The last 20 metres of the shoreline need to be wavy with turbulence. Calm seas are no good.
The thickness of the line in your reel,
The use of a shockleader is essential. The line in your reel should be .20mm - .22mm, the last 10 m will be thicker according to the weight you are using. Say for 100gr -.35mm, for 150 gr - .45mm. You can find different knots (very important) on magazines.
Proper type and presentation of the bait,
One needs to try different baits. I prefer a bunch of coreano tied to a size 6 hook. The (hniex ta l-imperjal) is very good as well but sometimes you will be amazed on how much a sliced fillet of fish like mackerel can be effective.
Finding the right spot,
Not too rocky but with some rocks nearby. The best results I have obtained are from Ramla il-Hamra in Gozo and from a small sandy beach near Selmun (not easy to reach) The presence of algae does not help to land a fish but usually algae is full of worms and molluscs on which fish feed and can be helpful.
Type of weights
There are a series of weights that nowadays can be found in local shops. I used to fabricate my own before because it was not possible to but from here. The best are the drop like with small arms to stick in the sand. These will help to fix the weight in the sand in order for your branch not to get tangled
And a number of specific accessories like bait clip holders, elastic bait tying bands, type of rod and reel, a good stand, and a lot of coffee to drink during waiting times!!!
The Italians are really fond of surfcasting because they have plenty of sandy beaches. We have very limited locations but I can assure you that they also complain of not catching enough fish for the time they spent fishing.
All the Italian magazines like pescare mare and pesca in mare are full of very good articles regarding surfcasting. _________________ Ppoulton
